15 Days Uganda Primate Tracking Safari

Day 1: Transfer to Budongo Forest

A Precise Destinations tour guide/driver will pick you from your hotel or place of residence in Kampala, brief you about the 15 Days Uganda Primate Tracking Safari and then take you on a 5 hour drive to Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park Conservation Area. You will make a stopover at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track the endangered white and black rhinos that are being cared for there. You will then proceed to Masindi for lunch and after drive to Budongo Forest and arrive at the lodge in the evening in time for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest – Top of the Falls Visit

You will begin your day with an early morning breakfast and then proceed to the forest headquarters for briefing about chimpanzee trekking and thereafter start your primate walk in Budongo Forest guided by well-trained ranger guides. Your walk will expose you to other primates, birds and different plant species in the forest and once you get into close proximity of the habituated chimpanzees, you will be allowed one hour of observations and photography after which you will return to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch your driver will drive you to the top of the Murchison Falls to observe how water squeezes itself in a narrow gorge of 7 meters and explodes downstream. You will then be transferred to a lodge in Murchison Falls National Park where you will relax, have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive – Afternoon Boat Cruise to the Base of the Falls

You will begin your day with a cup of African Coffee and then cross the Nile by ferry to the northern bank of the park which is teeming with wildlife. Your guide will help you spot the wild animals including; elephants, lions, Cape buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, hartebeest, waterbucks, oribi, bushbuck, hyenas and if you are lucky, leopards. You will then return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, go for a boat cruise upstream the calm Victoria Nile to the base of the world famous Murchison Falls, stopping just tens of meters from the “Devil’s Cauldron”. En-route, marvel at a bunch of animals including; hippos, crocodiles, elephants, waterbucks, Uganda Kobs and a number of bird species such as; goliath heron, Egyptian goose, pelican bee-eater, kingfisher, hornbill, cormorant and the rare shoebill stork. You will then leave the boat and go on a quite heavy hike to the top of the falls. See where the world’s longest river explodes violently through a narrow cleft in the rift valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43m below. Your driver/guide will be waiting for you to bring you back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Hot Air Balloon Ride – Boat Cruise on the Nile Delta

After your early morning breakfast, your tour guide / driver will transfer you to the Paraa side of Murchison Falls National Park to start your hot air balloon ride. The pilot will give you a short briefing before you get on board and start your hot air balloon safari. You will enjoy observing a good number of animals, the beautiful scenery and much more from your panoramic view. This whole experience may take to one hour exploring Murchison Falls National Park.

After landing, you will be given certificates and those that will have paid a full hot air balloon package, will be treated to a full bush breakfast. Return to your lodge for relaxation, lunch and an afternoon boat cruise to Nile Delta where there is a lot of action and activity. Depending on your luck, you may find elephants, buffaloes, shoebill stock, crocodiles and hippos crossing. Return back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Kibale National Park.

In the morning after breakfast, you will embark on a longer drive to Kibale National Park making some stopovers for lunch along the way as well as catching up some bird species. You will arrive at the lodge in time for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking and Bigodi Wetland Swamp

Early in the morning after taking breakfast, you will go to the park headquarters where you will be briefed about chimpanzee trekking. By 8:00am, you will be starting your search for the chimpanzees within the park. These primates are the closest relatives to the human being and they share 98% of the human DNA. There are also many other primate species which will be seen along with the chimpanzees and these include; the L’Hoest monkeys, golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, grey-checked mangabey, red tailed monkeys, the bush babies, and many bird species which include; green breasted pitta, rumped tinker bird, yellow spotted nicator, the green breasted pitta among many others.

In the group, the adult males dominate the group and provide protection to the territory against the rest of the males from other territories. The chimps are located by simply listening for their pant hooting calls. You will observe them as they feed, play as well as socializing with each other.

Later in the afternoon, you will visit Bigodi swamp which is also good for watching primates and birds. It’s mainly maintained by the local people and they earn a living from there. You will enjoy many bird species here including; the great blue turaco, and many more, the other primate species to view here include; the baboons, mongoose, otters, bush pigs as well as the bush bucks. You will then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

After your early morning breakfast, you will embark on a 3 hour drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will have an opportunity of passing through small towns, seeing several foothills of Mountain Rwenzori, small rivers that originate from Rwenzori mountain ranges as well as crossing the equator at Kikorongo. You will arrive at the lodge in time for lunch.

In the late afternoon, you will go on a game drive in Mweya. This section of Queen Elizabeth National Park is endowed with a good number of animals including; antelopes, buffaloes, warthogs, elephants and many other wild animals including lions and leopards. You will then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: Morning Game Drive – Afternoon Boat Cruise Along Kazinga Channel

After an early morning breakfast, you will drive back to Kasenyi plains for a game drive to catch up with what you could have missed out on your earlier game drive such as lions and leopards. Other mammals include; buffaloes, hippos, antelopes and many others. Return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will drive directly to Mweya jetty for an afternoon two hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. This is one of the highlights in Queen Elizabeth National Park. It provides you an opportunity to view over 300 out of the 600 water bird species recorded here and many animals such as; antelopes, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and hippos. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9: Kyambura George Chimpanzee Trekking – Lake Katwe Salt Mines Tour

After breakfast, you will be driven to Kyambura George to join other trekkers for briefing and there after start your chimpanzee walk in the gorge. Game ranger guides will help you identify several flora and fauna resident in this gorge and once you find a community of chimpanzees, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them for photography. Return back from the trek for lunch and relaxation at the lodge.

In the afternoon, you will visit Lake Katwe salt mines. Lake Katwe is an explosive crater which is gifted with salt and it’s the local community that mines/extracts salt from this lake. The local community guide will take you for a tour around salt mines explaining how salt extraction is done, challenges faced and opportunities available. Lake Katwe salt extraction project is one of the live examples supporting Queen Elizabeth National Park as one of the conservation areas in the whole world where man is sustainably co-existing harmoniously with wildlife. Return to the Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 10: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, you will drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park located in south western Uganda in Kabale district. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to almost half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas and the only national park where wild chimpanzees co-exist with mountain gorillas. Your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park will take you through rolling hills with terraced gardens of Irish potatoes and Kayonza tea plantation. You will arrive late in the afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You will have an early morning breakfast and drive to the park headquarters with packed lunch for pre-trek briefing by officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, who will inform you all about what should and shouldn’t be done during the gorilla trekking exercise. You will then enter the thick forest with your guides to find the gorillas, which can take you from half an hour to six hours. The steeply forested landscape is incredibly dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing access to tourists. On your trek, you are likely to spot other primates, birds and rare tree species. After finding the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them before trekking back to the park headquarters. There after you will be awarded a certificate for participating in gorilla trekking and thus contributing to the conservation of mountain gorillas.

In the afternoon, you will take a village walk which will give you a great chance to see how the people surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable Forest go about their daily lives. Your tour guides will do their best to answer any questions that you might have. It will amaze you how resourceful the local people are as you see and learn their ways and it is also a great way to support the local community in a direct way. You will then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 12: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Drive from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale District. Bunyonyi locally means small birds due to the abundance of small birds in this area. Lake Bunyonyi is said to be the deepest lake in Uganda and second deepest in East Africa. The lake presents unique and beautiful scenery as catch a glimpse of the many islands there.

Day 13: Canoeing or Hiking

After morning breakfast, you are free to admire the beauty of the lake and its surrounding hills as you are taking a canoe ride on the lake to explore the different islands with exciting history and you have chance to visit the Punishment Island where girls who would produce babies outside the legitimate traditional marriage would be dumped and left to die. This is a whole day activity and you will surely enjoy it. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 14: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

Start your day with an early morning breakfast, and then later drive to Lake Mburo National Park and arrive at the lodge in time for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will go for a boat cruise where you are likely to spot a number of animals and birds including; crested crane, pelicans, fish eagle, heron and many water birds and many more are seen clearly when on boat trips. Later in the evening you will embark on an evening game drive in the park. Lake Mburo National Park is popular for animals such as impalas, giraffes, zebras and so much more. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 15: Drive to Kampala City – Entebbe Airport – Out

You will have an early morning breakfast and leave for Kampala City. You will do a game drive as you exit the park for a chance to spot a number of animals such as olive baboons, vervet monkeys, yellow-winged bat, side striped jackal, zebras, hippopotamus, warthogs, buffalo, bushbucks, oribi, waterbuck and many more mammals. Then after embark on your journey to Kampala and make a stopover at Igongo Cultural Centre to learn more about the cultures of ethnic groups in western Uganda and for lunch. After lunch, you will get back on the road and make another stopover at the Equator Crossing for photography and to buy souvenirs to take back home if you so wish. You will then continue to Kampala arriving in the late evening. If you have an evening flight that day, you will be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your flight back home or to your next destination.
